Goessel football avoids shutout

Staff Writer

It took 48 minutes, but the Bluebirds managed a touchdown as time expired in the game with Moundridge on Friday.

Moundridge scored on their first possession, but the Bluebird defense came up with stops and created turnovers to keep the margin 8-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Goessel marched down the field in the second quarter, but stalled when getting inside the red zone. The Wildcats scored again with just under four minutes to play in the first half. Capitalizing on a Bluebird turnover, Moundridge crossed the goal line again with 11 seconds left in the first half to take a 20-0 lead at the break.

Goessel’s defense tried to contain the rushing game but the larger Wildcats scored in the third quarter.

After two more scores by the home team in the fourth quarter, the Bluebirds were behind 42-0. With seconds remaining, Zach Zogleman out-sprinted everyone on the field for a 59-yard touchdown run as time expired on the clock.

The Bluebirds lost the game 42-6. Goessel will play at Hope on Friday before hosting Wakefield on Sept. 14.
