Goessel football edged out by Moundridge
Staff writer
Penalties and miscues hurt both teams in Goessel’s 18-12 loss against Moundridge on Friday.
The Bluebirds got inside the 10-yardline twice in the first half, only to be pushed back by a bad snap and an illegal formation. Goessel was scoreless the first half, while the Wildcats scored once in the first quarter and again with nine seconds left in the second quarter. Moundridge led 12-0 at half time, as the Bluebird defense held on extra points.
The Bluebird defense forced a turnover on downs to open the second half, and Goessel found life in its running game behind offensive linemen Dylan Riley, Eddie Gaeddert and Logan Sterk.
After long runs by Kale Funk and Dylan Lindeman, Funk finished the drive with a 19-yard touchdown.
Dylan Lindeman carried the ball on a 21-yard misdirection play to tie the game 12-12 with 9:58 left.
After a penalty on the Bluebirds on a late hit out of bounds gave the Wildcats a much-needed first down, Moundridge capped an eight-minute drive with a score from one yard out.
The Bluebirds, trailing 12-18, got the ball with 1:50 remaining in the game. Desperate for first downs, Goessel tried to connect on passing plays, and the Wildcats intercepted a Bluebird pass running the clock out.
Goessel ended the game with 167 yards rushing and 60 yards passing. Luke Wiens led the Bluebirds on defense with 13.5 tackles, followed by Jacob Hagewood with 10.5, Lindeman at eight, and Dylan Riley with eight tackles, two of them in the Wildcat backfield.
Goessel starts 0-1 for the season and will host Rural Vista (0-1) Friday.
