Goessel played Little River even in the first half Friday, but came out on the short end of 36-20 contest.
Both defenses allowed just one touchdown in the first half, with neither team scoring in the first quarter.
Miguel Guerrero caught a 7-yard scoring pass from Josh Schmidt halfway through the second quarter, and Chase Flaming carried in for the extra points and an 8-0 Bluebirds lead. Little River tied the score with 58 seconds to play in the first half on a 10-yard run.
A 47-yard scamper sparked Little River’s first drive of the second half, setting up a 7-yard touchdown for a 16-8 lead.
It took Goessel just 22 seconds to respond, with Miguel Guerrero sprinting 54 yards around left end to get the Bluebirds back within two, 14-16.
The Redskins scored twice more to lead 30-14 with 5:35 left in the game.
The Bluebirds sprang into a no-huddle offense and completed passes to Trevor Beisiel, Jordan Griffin, and Miguel Guerrero. Lineman Kenny Hammond grabbed a deflected pass for positive yards. Guerrero scored on an 8-yard run and the Bluebirds trailed 20-30 with 3:17 remaining.
Goessel’s offense didn’t touch the ball again, as Little River controlled the clock and crossed the goal line with 7 seconds left for a final score of 36-20.
Guerrero ran for 104 yards, caught two passes for 21 yards and scored 3 touchdowns.
Guerrero recorded 11 tackles, and Beisel notched 8.5 tackles and one interception.
Goessel is 2-3 overall and 0-1 in district games. The Bluebirds will be at Ellinwood on Friday for another district contest.
