Goessel football picks up second win

Staff writer

Last year the only team that Goessel beat was Sylvan-Lucas, and the Bluebirds repeated that victory Friday.

Goessel scored first on a 9-yard run by Miguel Guerrero, and then scored again on a pass from Josh Schmidt to Trevor Beisel covering 30 yards, to lead 12-0.

Schmidt ran from 4 yards for another score, only to be matched by a Sylvan touchdown several minutes later. Schmidt ran in again from 4 yards, passing to Beisel for the extra points. Sylvan scored again before halftime, cutting Goessel’s lead to 26-14.

Both teams scored once in the third period and Guerrero had the honors of a 4-yard run and the extra points. The Bluebirds built a 20-point lead with Beisel running in from 6 yards and Schmidt scoring the extra points. With just over three minutes to play in the game, Sylvan returned a fumble for a score, but the Bluebirds were able to run out the clock for their second win of the season 42-28.

The Bluebirds defense picked up three fumbles and intercepted one pass. Matt Regier was credited with 10½ tackles and Beisel recorded 9.

The Bluebirds accumulated 209 yards rushing and 81 yards passing.

Goessel will play its first district game at home Friday against Little River. The Bluebirds are now 2-2 for the season.
