GHS golfers take eighth

Staff writer

Out of the 100 schools classified in 1A, only 12 schools qualified to participate as teams May 23 at the state golf tournament at Emporia Municipal Golf Course.

The Goessel boys golf team finished eighth.

The Bluebirds shot a team score of 365 with three of this year’s team also having participated in last year’s 2A state championships. This year Shane Goerzen played well to score 88 for the 18 holes. Trey Schmidt was right behind with 89. Braden Unruh and Jake Smucker came through with 94 each and Neal Brubaker came home with a 98. Davis Cook rounded out the team scoring with a 103.

Goerzen, Smucker, and Brubaker were on last year’s team that finished in a tie for eighth place in 2010.

“I am very proud of these guys qualifying in back-to-back years in 2A and now 1A,” coach Justin Coup said.

None of the Bluebirds was able to medal in this meet, but held their own among the 91 participants in this field.

Brubaker and Smucker graduated from the Goessel High School team, leaving significant holes for new talent to fill for next season. Coup will also be leaving the Goessel coaching staff, after completing two years as head golf coach.
