Staff writer

The Goessel volleyball team experienced satisfaction Sept. 21 and disappointment on Saturday.

The Bluebirds improved their league record to 6-0 at the first meet last week with wins over Solomon and Little River. Goessel opened up a lead in game one with Solomon after an 8-8 tie to win, 25-15. In the second game, the Bluebirds allowed Solomon to get within three points after an early eight-point lead, but Goessel held off the Gorillas for a 25-17 win.

Against Little River, the first game was close all the way to the end. Goessel trailed 10-13 but grabbed a 16-15 lead. The Redskins tied the game at 21-21 but the Bluebirds won, 25-22. Goessel dominated the second game, 25-10.

On Saturday, the Bluebirds traveled to Olpe for stiff competition in a round robin tournament. The Bluebirds were dominated by the host school, with losses of 13-25 and 16-25.

Goessel righted the ship against Marais des Cygnes Valley. The Bluebirds came from an eight-point deficit to lose the first game by four, 21-25. In the second game, Goessel fell behind 8-14 but came storming back to finish strong and win, 25-20.

In the deciding third game, the Bluebirds again came from behind to win, 25-21.

Against cross-county rival Peabody-Burns, the Bluebirds won 25-21 and 25-13. Goessel never found their stride against the Central Christian Cougars, losing in two games 10-25 and 12-25.

In the final match of the day, Goessel finished strong against Northern Heights in the first game, winning 25-17. The Bluebirds had to try to play catch-up in the final two games but lost both by a tight 24-26 score.

Goessel finished the week at 15-8 overall with a 6-0 league record.

Goessel will be at Wakefield on Tuesday for more league action.
