GOESSEL: Girls' basketball

Sports writer

After a slow start, the Goessel High School girls’ basketball team fell behind Argonia 21-3 in the second quarter.

The tide began to turn as the Bluebirds outscored the ranked Red Raiders 31-15 the rest of the game.

Goessel whittled away at the deficit with aggressive defense and long-range baskets from Kendra Flaming.

With 30 seconds to play, Karina Harvey hit three free-throws to tie the game at 34.

Argonia went down the floor and made a basket to regain the lead and the Bluebirds had a shot to tie the game that missed at the buzzer.

Flaming led the team with 13 points and 11 rebounds, Aspen Frey had seven points, Harvey six, Karis Janzen five, Isabel Tamoj two, and Jesscia Goertzen one point.

The girls are now 2-3 with Heart of America League play beginning their next game Jan. 6 against Hutch Trinity (3-1) at home.
