Goessel girls beat Solomon, win league

Goessel defeated Solomon 54-33 Friday to complete a clean sweep of Wheat State League foes and claim the regular season title.

The Bluebirds finished the first quarter on a 7-2 run, as Page Hiebert, Aleena Cook, Makayla King and Alicen Meysing all scored to give Goessel the lead 10-7.

With the Bluebirds’ leading scorer, Page Hiebert, sidelined because of fouls, teammates picked up the pace and controlled the last three quarters of the game.

Long passes by point guard Eden Hiebert keyed fast break buckets by Brittney Hiebert, Cook, and Meysing, as Goessel built an 11-point lead by halftime.

With relentless defense and strong rebounding, the Bluebirds led 36-23 at the end of three periods. Olivia Duerksen, Eden Hiebert, Meysing, and Cook scored fourth-quarter baskets as the Bluebirds coasted to a 54-33 win.

Goessel outrebounded the Gorillas 37-19.

Cook led Goessel scorers with 12 points, followed by Eden Hiebert and Meysing with 11 apiece. Page Hiebert collected 10 points.

Goessel finished the league regular season 7-0.

The Bluebirds added another win to their record Tuesday with an easy 41-14 win against Udall. Page Hiebert scored 13 to lead the Bluebirds.

Goessel travels to play Canton on Friday.
