Goessel girls lose three at Berean tourney

The Goessel girls’ basketball team fell behind early in their first game at the Berean tournament. Berean jumped out to a 14-1 lead at the end of the first quarter Wednesday, but for the next three quarters Goessel trailed 30-31. The final score showed Berean winning 45-31.
In the second quarter Porclein Unruh hit a 3-pointer and Stephany Meyer banked in four points as Goessel trailed 29-12. Elizabeth Schmucker came alive with nine third quarter points as the Bluebirds kept pace with the Warriors, but did not have enough to make a dent in the first quarter deficit.
Scoring summary Wednesday: Schmucker, 13; Meyer, 6; Unruh, 3; Haley O’Neal, 2; Madison Smith, 2; Megan Guerrero, 2; Rebecca Sawyer, 2; Elizabeth Alderfer, 1.
For the second game of the tournament, the Bluebirds got off to a slow start. Douglass had built a 16-5 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Alderfer scored four points in the second quarter to cut into the lead and the Bluebirds trailed 20-13 at the half.
Schmucker added four points in the third period, to maintain the seven point deficit, but Douglass ultimately won 41-29.
Scoring summary Thursday: Schmucker, 10; Meyer, 7; Alderfer, 7; Smith, 5.
On Saturday, the Bluebirds took an early lead against a scrappy Burrton team. Five Bluebirds scored in the first quarter as they led 12-9.
Stephany Meyer picked up 10 points in the second quarter as the Bluebirds took an 18-11 lead, but the Chargers continued to challeng every shot.
Goessel led 24-23 at halftime, but Burrton snatched a 34-28 lead by the end of the third quarter, making 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
Goessel continued to struggle in the fourth, and Burrton stayed hot from the free throw line.
The Chargers hit no field goals, but converted 10-of-14 free throws in the quarter to hand the Bluebirds a 44-37 loss.
The trio of losses dropped the girls to 3-10. Goessel plays at home Friday against Little River.
