Contributing writer

The Goessel girls’ game Jan. 14 was at the Goessel gym with Argonia, but it was more than six minutes into the game before Goessel scored. With a 7-0 deficit, Goessel recorded a field goal and free throw.

The Bluebirds trailed 10-6 at the end of the first quarter. They briefly took the lead twice in the second quarter, but Argonia led at halftime 25-17 and won 52-39.

Scoring for the Bluebirds were Page Hiebert, 8; Alyssa Booton, 6; Alicen Meysing, 6; Aleena Cook, 5; Erin Brubaker, 5; Jennifer Meysing, 4; Riley Jarvis, 3; and Chelsea Stika, 2.

The best description for Friday’s game at home with Elyria Christian was miserable. The Bluebirds only shot 16 percent from the field and 38 percent from the free-throw line.

Stika hit one free throw in the first quarter and Goessel was behind 17-1 at the break. Hiebert dropped in a basket to start the second quarter, but this would be the only field goal in the first half and Goessel went into the locker room trailing 29-6.

Alicen Meysing hit a basket and Brubaker and Booton scored in the third quarter to cut the lead to 36-14. Makayla King got in the scorebook in the fourth quarter with a field goal and two free throws, but the Eagles’ lead was too much to overcome. Goessel lost this Wheat State League game 41-22.

Scoring for the Bluebirds were Hiebert, 6; Alicen Meysing, 4; King, 4; Brubaker, 3; Anna Wiens, 2; Booton, 2; and Stika, 1.
