After struggling from the free-throw line for 28 minutes, the Goessel High School girls basketball team hit eight of nine free throws at the end of the game, to seal a victory at Northern Heights Friday night.

Goessel led by four points early in the second period, but the halftime score was 22-21, with Goessel being ahead by only one.

The third quarter went well for the Bluebirds as the defense held the Wildcats to only four points in the quarter and Goessel led, 34-25. A basket by Karis Janzen early in the fourth quarter gave the visitors their biggest lead of the night at 36-25.

Seniors Aspen Frey and Karina Harvey, with junior Kendra Flaming, hit key free throws at the end of the game to give the Bluebirds a 44-34 win.

Scoring for the Bluebird girls were Aspen Frey 16, Kendra Flaming 13, Jessica Goertzen 5, Karis Janzen 4, Karina Harvey, and Jennifer Van Horn and Shanna Klassen with 2 points each.

Goessel will host the Bluebird Classic this week and the girls will have games Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. The varsity girls will play at 6 p.m. Tuesday and Friday night with Saturday’s game determined by the number of wins the previous nights.
