Staff writer

In Friday’s cross-county match-up, the Goessel High School girls basketball team fell behind and then scratched its way back to send the game into overtime, before Centre would depend on defense to win the game, 37-32.

Goessel led at the end of the first quarter, 9-6, but only scored 2 points in the second and third quarters to find themselves behind, 22-13. Centre scored first in the fourth quarter, but then the Bluebirds began to cut into the deficit. Alex Hiebert started the comeback with a 10-foot basket on an inbounds play. Shanna Klassen scored 7 points with 5 from the free-throw line.

Jennifer Van Horn put in a basket from close range and a 3-pointer from Aimee Flaming with less than two minutes to play gave the Bluebirds a 27-26 lead. Centre hit two free throws with 43 seconds to play to give the Cougars a 28-27 lead, but Jessica Harvey hit one of two free throws to send the game into overtime.

In the 4-minute overtime period, Centre’s defense prevented the Bluebirds from getting the ball across half-court in several possessions. The Cougars connected on 4-of-6 free throws to take a 32-28 lead. With a minute to play, Harvey again connected on 1-of-2 free throws and a 3-pointer from Van Horn got the Bluebirds within 2 points. Centre connected on a couple of free throws late in the game to seal a 37-32 win at Goessel.

Klassen ended the game with 10 points, Van Horn claimed 9 points with 7 rebounds. Johanna Hoffman scored 4 points, Aimee Flaming hit 3 points and collected 7 steals. D’Ambra Kruger scored 2 points, Hiebert ended with 2 points and 7 rebounds, and Harvey scored 2 points and dished out 4 assists. The Goessel girls are now 1-3 in league play and 2-11 overall. The Bluebirds will have four away games this week at Flint Hills High School, White City, Little River, and Peabody-Burns.
