Goessel girls' team loses to Berean

Contributing writer

Sometimes, when a team plays one that is highly ranked, you come home with a pleasant surprise. This was not the case on Feb. 21, when Goessel traveled to Elbing for a non-league basketball game.

The Goessel girls were in a tie game halfway through the first quarter with the highly ranked Berean Academy Warriors. But the polished home team made sure that the Goessel girls would not sneak away with a win when they went on a 15-0 run to finish the first quarter. Goessel trailed, 21-6 at the end of one period and 41-10 at halftime.

The quickness and depth of the Warriors continued to set the pace for the game. Goessel was able to put a slight dent in the deficit in the third quarter, finishing at 21-49. Both teams scored 9 points in the final period as the Warriors’ starters were assigned to the bench, and Berean won the last game of the regular season, 58-30.

Jessica Harvey scored 10 points for the Bluebirds; Alex Hiebert, Johanna Hoffman, and D’Ambra Kruger each tallied 6 points, and Aimee Flaming hit 2 points. The Goessel girls played at Burrton on Tuesday in the 1A-D1 sub-state tournament, with the winners coming to the Goessel gym for semifinal matches on Friday. Burrton has a record of 9-11 compared to Goessel’s 4-16.
