The Goessel High School girls’ basketball team won their first Wheat State League game of the season, 45-24, on Friday at Wakefield.
GHS forward Alex Hiebert scored first with an inside move, Jessica Harvey got a steal and layup, and the Alex and Page Hiebert both hit from 10 feet to create an 8-0 lead for the Bluebirds. By the end of the quarter, Wakefield had narrowed the gap, but the Bluebirds led 12-5.
In the second period, the Bombers played more aggressive. They went on a 9-1 run to end the half with Goessel leading, 17-16.
The Bombers hit a free throw to tie the game at 17, but then Goessel’s defense held Wakefield to only 3 points in the third quarter. Jo Hoffman poured in 8 points in the third period as Goessel went on a 10-0 run. The quarter ended with the Bluebirds in command, 31-19.
Page Hiebert and Harvey scored 7 more points for the Bluebirds in the fourth quarter before Wakefield would get on the board. The game ended with Alyssa Booton launching a shot from the emblem at center court and hitting her first 3-pointer of the season for a Goessel win, 45-24.
Alex Hiebert collected 11 rebounds with 5 at the offensive end. Hoffman swiped 5 steals and Harvey contributed 5 assists.
Scoring for the Bluebirds at Wakefield were Johanna Hoffman with 12 points; Alex Hiebert, 10; Jessica Harvey, 9; Page Hiebert, 6.
Goessel played Tuesday at home against Hope.
