Goessel girls win two
Staff writer
Goessel started slowly on senior recognition night Friday at the Bluebirds Gym, but pulled away late to defeat Elyria Christian 33-24.
The Eagles jumped out to a 10-4 lead at the end of the first quarter by taking advantage of cold Goessel shooting. Both teams scored just 3 points in the second period, as the Eagles continued to lead by six at halftime.
Elyria was scoreless for nearly 7 minutes as the Bluebirds began to warm up. Aleena Cook went the length of the court with a steal and layup. Alicen Meysing hit a free throw. Page Hiebert picked up several offensive rebounds and scored on put-backs as Goessel took the lead 14-13. Brittney Hiebert added a basket to give the Bluebirds an 18-15 lead.
Goessel stretched its lead to 9 points in the fourth quarter, then kept pace from the free-throw line to win 33-24.
Page Hiebert led the team with 13 points, Cook added 9, and Brittney Hiebert banked in 4.
Tuesday results
The Goessel girls led from start to finish on Tuesday at home against Peabody. In a meeting earlier this season, Goessel allowed Peabody-Burns to score 32 points, but at home the Bluebirds clamped down on defense, winning 50-13 and only allowing the Warriors two field goals for the whole game.
