GOESSEL: Goessel girls finish third in league meet
Staff writer
In the first ever Wheat State League meet Friday, Brittny Czarnowsky and Tia Goertzen finished first in two events which sets the standard for other competitors in the future.
Goertzen won the 300-meter hurdles and Czarnowsky won the 3200. Jennifer Van Horn set personal bests in the javelin and long jump. Jessica Harvey also bettered her mark for this season in javelin. Shianne DeFreese got her best distance in the shot put.
The beautiful day turned into a chilly event with a west breeze by the end of the meet. Exciting moments followed Goertzen from event to event. In the triple jump, Goertzen missed first place by one inch. In the 100-meter hurdles she leaned at the right time to snatch second place by one-tenth of a second. Goertzen finished first in the 300 hurdles with the second-place finisher right on her heels.
Little River girls’ team won the league title with Wakefield in second and Goessel in third. The Bluebirds will be at Burlington on Friday for the 1A regional track meet where the top four places in each event will move on to the state track meet the following weekend.
