It was a windy experience at the Herington Golf Course for the GHS varsity boys April 6, but the top six teams were separated by only nine strokes. The Bluebirds came in at sixth place as a four-man team with two individuals receiving medals.
Tyler Schmidt won the closest-to-the-pin contest, but Hayden Goerzen made two trips around the course leading the team with a score of 83 and a fourth-place finish overall. Schmidt followed close behind with a score of 85 and seventh place. Neal Brubaker and Austin Cooper shot 96 each and Aaron Reimer was one stroke behind them at 97. Jake Smucker, in his first varsity meet, shot a 103.
“This was a great start for the season,” head coach Justin Coup said. “We look to improve before heading back to Herington for 2A regionals in mid-May.”
On Thursday, the JV golf team also competed at Herington. Shane Goerzen earned seventh place, Stephan Goertzen finished 12th and Drake Sterk collected 13th. Just out of the top 15 were Kent Duerksen, Dan Smucker, and Joe Campbell. Sixty-two golfers competed at this JV meet.
The Bluebird golf team’s next meet is at El Dorado Saturday.
