A tough course greeted GHS golfers on May 21 at Hutchinson Highlands Country Club for state tournament competition. It appeared that scores were about 10 strokes higher than usual for the Bluebird team. The narrow fairways and severe gulch lining most holes created a difficult challenge.
Shane Goerzen finished with a sixth place individual medal with a score of 90.
Trey Schmidt finished in a tie for 13th with a 95, Dan Smucker finished in 43rd with a score of 108 and Stephan Goertzen rounded out the team score with a 115. Goessel’s team score of 408 tied for fifth with Jetmore. Tyler Schultz score of 119 and Braden Unruh’s 135 finished out the scoring for the Bluebirds.
A total of 84 players competed in this tournament and the winning score was 80 and the highest score was 190. Last year Goessel also competed at state and finished in eighth place. This was the third year for junior Shane Goerzen to compete at the State Golf Tournament. Trey Schmidt and Braden Unruh qualified for the State meet for the second year.
