Goessel junior high girls win league title

Staff writer

The Goessel junior high girls’ basketball team won the Wheat State League Championship Saturday in Centre. Going into the tournament, they sported a 10-3 record and hoped to stop a disappointing two-game skid at the end of the season.

The girls rose to the challenge in a tight game against Peabody-Burns, winning by one point, 21-20, on Thursday to advance to Saturday’s competition.

Goessel defeated Little River 24-18, then marched on to win the championship against Wakefield, 21-11.

“We talked before these games about how we have a special team this year,” coach Joe Biggs said. “We have girls that care about each other, and any time you have that, you always have the chance to turn things around and win.”

The Wheat State League Championship junior high girls’ basketball team included Rebekah Herrel, Jade Sterk, Anna Wiens, Ashley Hiebert, Page Hiebert, Alicen Meysing, Kylie Unruh, Alyssa Booton, Jenna Nightengale, Eden Hiebert, Olivia Duerksen, Aleena Cook, Julia Nightengale, Shelbi Stultz, and Jennifer Meysing. Coaches were Biggs and Deryll Amstutz.
