Goessel netters go 4th in league

Despite playing Saturday’s Wheat State League championship at home, Goessel’s volleyball team saw a fourth place finish, and a 2-3 record for the day.

The Bluebirds opened by losing the first set to Canton-Galva 17-25, but survived the second set 26-24, and rode that momentum to a 25-19 win in the third set.

Goessel had less luck against Rural Vista, losing in straight sets 25-12, 25-9. Goessel defeated Elyria Christian 25-14 and then squeaked out a victory 28-26.

Elyria Christian provided the last sniff of victory for Goessel, as the Bluebirds lost each of their final matches in straight sets.

In the fourth match, Goessel was handed another clear defeat, losing to Little River 25-14, 25-12.

The Bluebirds closed their play with a defeat to eventual-champion Herington 26-24, 25-12.

The Bluebirds fared better in Tuesday’s matches, where they won the Class 1A regional.

Goessel had a first-round bye, then defeated Elyria Christian 25-18, 25-19 in straight sets.

The team needed more time to defeat Burrton in the final, but still proved too much to stop. The Bluebirds won, 25-16, 16-25, 25-20 to punch their ticket to substate.

Substate will be played Saturday at Flint Hills High School
