Goessel netters rounds out league play with 2 wins

Staff writer

Last week was Goessel’s final showing for league play, and the Bluebirds won both matches.

“I was pleased with the steady play tonight,” coach Crysta Guhr said. “This team has had its ups and downs, but at this time of the year we need to be consistent.”

Goessel defeated Solomon in two close sets 25-19, 25-23.

The Bluebirds then took on neighbors Canton-Galva, and gradually built a lead that lasted until the 25-16 final.

In the second set, the Bluebirds led 20-13, and Elizabeth Alderfer connected from the left while Raechel Zogleman hit from the right. Kaleigh Guhr fed Bethany Herrel in the middle for a winner, and Lyna McCombs pushed a ball to the open spot on the floor.

Goessel prevailed 25-18 in the second set to win its fourth consecutive match, the team’s longest winning streak of the season.

Regional tournaments for Class 1A begin Tuesday Oct. 22, and Goessel will host seven schools. The top two teams advance to an Oct. 26 sub-state tournament at Rosalia.

Goessel finished the season with a 6-3 record in the Wheat State League, and a 14-13 record overall. The Bluebirds finished fourth in the 10-team league.
