The Goessel volleyball team competed Saturday at the Wheat State League volleyball tournament at Canton.
The Bluebirds battled from start to finish and emerged as the champions of the post-season tournament.
“I was very, very pleased with the consistency that we had today.” head coach Crysta Guhr said. “If we can just get healthy and stay healthy for the week.”
Goessel tangled with the Canton-Galva Eagles in the first match and Goessel won the first set, but the Eagles forced a third set. Goessel prevailed 25-14, 21-25, 25-19.
Stephany Meyer connected on kill after kill with assists from Savanna Wuest.
Goessel came from behind in the first set with Little River, winning 25-23.
In the second set, the Bluebirds seemed in control until the Redskins tied at 23-23.
The Bluebirds eked out another 25-23 win.
Herington forced three sets with the Bluebirds.
In the third set, Ciera Nolte and Raechel Boese hit winners and Kaleigh Guhr served three aces in a row, allowing Goessel to come out ahead 25-14, 18-25, 25-15.
The Bluebirds defeated Solomon in straight sets 25-20, 25-16.
Elizabeth Alderfer found scoring opportunities from the left side, and Madi Smith and Audessi Unruh played consistent defense in the back row.
Bethany Herrel found success blocking and Elizabeth Schmucker served aggressively.
Goessel had a 4-0 record at this point in the tournament and every other team had lost at least two matches, so the Bluebirds knew they would take the tournament title.
Rural Vista, who had beaten the Bluebirds earlier this season, had a chance for second place if they were able to defeat Goessel in the last match.
The Heat jumped out to a 6-2 lead and kept a four to five point margin the whole game. For every Nolte, Meyer and Aldefer hit, it seemed that Rural Vista had an answer.
Chloe Smith served well along with Wuest, but Goessel lost 25-19.
The Bluebirds jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set, but it did not take long for Rural Vista to tie and again the Bluebirds trailed the rest of the set. Rural Vista won the match with a 25-21 final score.
Goessel finished the day 4-1 and moved their season record to 24-12.
Goessel will now wait for the seedings in the 2A sub-state tournament for Saturday at Inman.
