Goessel rolls over Pretty Prairie

Staff writer

The Goessel Bluebirds traveled to Pretty Prairie on Friday and came home winners, 50-26.

Goessel got off to a slow start for a second consecutive game, as the Bulldogs scored the first four points. Then the Bluebirds got rolling, going on an 11-2 run to take the lead 11-6. Goessel’s pressure defense created easy baskets en route to the lead.

Aleena Cook and Page Hiebert finished numerous lay-ups off long passes in the transition game. Leading 18-13 in the second quarter, Goessel finished the half with 13 unanswered points to blow the game open. The Bluebirds led 31-13 at halftime.

Pretty Prairie scored the first six points of the third period and slowed the Bluebirds by switching to a zone defense. Goessel led 37-20 at the end of three periods.

The Bluebirds got back on pace in the fourth, building a 28-point lead that allowed head coach Ryan Hoopes to clear the bench.

Page Hiebert led the team with 21 points and 5 assists. Aleena Cook tallied 12 points with 3 steals. Alicen Meysing scored 7, Brittney Hiebert 5, and 2 points each for Erin Brubaker, Chelsea Stika and Eden Hiebert.

Goessel played at Centre on Tuesday, and will face Wakefield at home Friday. The Bluebirds are 2-0 in Wheat State League games and 7-0 overall.
