Goessel's Reece Hiebert qualifies for state golf

Contributing writer

“It was windy, it was just a terrible golf day,” Goessel golfer Lawton Makovec said the day after the regional golf tournament.

“No part of our game was immune from problems,” agreed teammate Lucas Hiebert.

Even coach Chad Lindeman said, “This was not what I expected, but that’s golf.”

The 40 mph wind added strokes to every golfer’s score for the day.

Goessel quietly anticipated being among the top three teams at the regional meet on Monday at Pretty Prairie, but the top three spots went to Ashland, Chetopa, and Marmaton Valley. The Bluebirds came in at a disappointing fifth place.

Qualifying for state from each 1A regional are five individuals in addition to the players on those top three teams. Only Reece Hiebert managed to make it into this group for Goessel. Hiebert had a score of 105 to finish in 10th place individually. Zach Showalter, another Goessel senior, hit 118 for the day. Lucas Hiebert finished at 122; Makovec, 124; and Kellen Froese, 130.

Reece Hiebert traveled to Garden City for his state tournament at the Southwind Country Club on Tuesday, his last appearance in a Bluebird uniform, and he ends his high school career at the highest level possible.
