Goessel scholars are state-bound

Staff writer

Shutting out pool teams 7-0, the Goessel Scholars Bowl team lost two games in the championship round but was able to secure a third place finish, advancing them to the State Scholars Bowl meet Saturday.

A four-way tie for first place was decided by tiebreaker rules.

The Bluebirds defeated the seven teams in their pool — Smith Center, Ellsworth, Republic County, Sterling, Ell-Saline, Hutchinson Trinity and Marion — before moving to the championship round-robin sets with five other schools.

This year’s team includes seniors Edel Miller, Nathan Impson and Chris Strecker; freshman Annalise Miller; and two exchange students from Germany, Daniel Uhlig and Jan Wolters.

Goessel is coached by Braden Unruh and assisted by Marcia Brubaker.

In final sets, Sterling came from behind to snatch a 50-45 win over the Bluebirds. Next, Goessel defeated Inman 60-10, and Hillsboro 40-20.

After three tie-breaker questions, Sacred Heart handed Goessel their second loss in the championship round, dimming their chances to finish in the top three teams.

However, Wolters and Miller put together the winning punch to win the fifth and final set 65-20, leaving four teams tied with 3-2 records.

Rules were checked, and Sterling was determined the winner, Sacred Heart second, Goessel third, and Republic County fourth.

The team will compete Saturday at the state contest in Inman.
