Contributing writer

Goessel will compete in the Regional 1A Scholars’ Bowl Tournament on Thursday in Leroy.

The Bluebirds ended regular season on Saturday with a 7-2 record in a tournament, losing only to Emporia and El Dorado.

There will be 12 1A schools at the regional meet, with the top three teams advancing to the state scholars’ bowl tournament on Feb. 9 at Rosalia. Coach Wes Schmidt-Tieszen has picked Johanna Hoffman, Ben Wiens, Heath Goertzen, Mark Schmidt, David Hesse and Bjoern Schumann to represent the Bluebirds in these post-season tournaments.

In the Wheat State League Tournament, Goessel’s varsity team lost to Solomon in the finals. The team of Garrett Woelk, Schmidt, Ben Wiens, Goertzen, Schumann and Hesse finished the day 5-2. The Junior varsity team consisting of Gentry Thiessen, Aaron Woelk, Arik Schmidt, Dane Kruger, Luke Unruh and Zach Wiens (all freshmen and sophomores) ended with a 7-0 record winning first place.

Last year, Goessel scholars qualified for state and finished fourth.
