The Goessel scholars’ bowl team will return to the state tournament after a dominating performance at 1A regionals on Thursday.
The Bluebird team of Ben Wiens, Heath Goertzen, Mark Schmidt, Gentry Thiessen, Erin Brubaker, and Zach Wiens went 8-1 in the regional tournament to tie for first with Lebo. Goessel had defeated Lebo 70-20 in the first match of the day, so the Bluebirds won by tie-breaker.
With each correct answer worth ten points, the Bluebirds won by an average of 43 points in the nine matches played. Goessel, along with Lebo and Centre, will advance to the state tournament Saturday at Satanta.
Last year at state, Goessel finished third and Satanta won first with Udall finishing second.
On Jan. 13, the team finished first in the Wheat State League Tournament. The Bluebirds dominated the tournament with a 6-0 record, winning by an average of 48 points. The junior varsity also went 6-0 at league.
The league tournament also included players Andi Briechle, Aaron Woelk, Alicen Meysing, Luke Unruh, Leighton Wagner, and Jordan Schmucker.
