GOESSEL: Sportsmanship trumps personal gain in Goessel cross-country meet

Contributing writer

Goessel competed at Canton-Galva cross-country meet Thursday near Maxwell Game Preserve.

In the girls’ race, Goessel’s leading runner noticed a competitor from another school had collapsed during the race. A note at the bottom of the results sheet reads, “The girls in 21st place and 18th place stopped to assist a runner who had passed out.  We gave them a tie for 21st, as they finished the run together.”

Kristen Hoffman and a girl from Flinthills High School finished together in 21st place.

Brittny Czarnowsky came in 18th.

Shanna Klassen ended the race in sixth place, Lindsey Wedel finished eighth, and Johanna Rumler crossed the line 16th.

The boys garnered first place as a team when Jared Reimer came in first individually with a new course record of 18 minutes, 23 seconds.

Laird Goertzen placed fourth, Lukas Kemkes came in seventh, Said Bahoul finished ninth in his first race of the season. Derek Kruger ended the race in 13th with Chad Wedel right behind in 14th.  Simon Wittenschlaeger and Grant Flaming finished 19th and 20th, respectively, and Stephen Goertzen ended the race in 24th.

Goessel will run at the Marion Invitational on Thursday.
