GOESSEL: Volleyball

Sports writer

With Goessel and Sedgwick high schools volleyball players on the same team during the summer club season, it set up a match-up between good friends when the two meet in Heart of America League play.

After several years of Sedgwick winning the matches, Goessel went to three games Sept. 6 to defeat the Cardinals.

Goessel trailed by 10 points in game one and began to find their rhythm but still lost 25-20.

In game two, the Bluebirds got behind 12-2 and battled back to scratch out a 26-24 victory.

“In the third game, we came out and finally played well at the beginning of the game,” head coach Crysta Guhr said.

Goessel held on to their lead and beat Sedgwick 25-19.

On the same evening the Bluebirds met Little River and won handily 25-16, 25-15.

Karis Janzen led the team with 17 kills and 10 blocks.

Rinda Duerksen also had 10 blocks along with 11 kills, while Kendra Flaming served 100 percent with four aces.

Jessica Goertzen registered 36 assists and Karina Harvey led the team with 25 digs.

Goessel finished the League season with an HOA record of 9-2, and an overall record of 23-6.

As the Bluebirds have a shot at a 30 win season, they realize they have some tough games ahead.

GHS played Remington and Peabody Tuesday in non-league games, but results were not available at press time.

The team will be at Inman Saturday for the HOA tournament.

Goessel will be the three seed in the tournament.
