Goessel volleyball aces opponents

Staff Writer

Bluebirds volleyball began the season Tuesday at Ell-Saline High School with wins over Haven and Herington.

Even though this was their first match, and Haven had already played six matches this year, the Bluebirds seemed to click. Goessel handled the first set 25-11 and the second set 25-19.

The Bluebirds have experience in the setter position, as Savanna Wuest dished out multiple assists in the first match.

Goessel also has experience in the back row on defense, and the passing game worked well.

Where the Bluebirds have less experience is on the front line hitting, but hitting was not lacking.

Against Herington, Goessel won 25-9, 25-17. As coach Crystal Guhr was tabulating the statistics, she realized the Bluebirds accounted for 24 aces served in four sets.

“Our aggressive serves were able to take opposing hitters out of their offense,” said Guhr. “I was equally pleased with our ability to score first ball kills out of serve receive.”

The Bluebirds will be home on Tuesday with Wheat State League matches against Herington and Little River. Goessel will host the Bluebird Invitational Tournament Saturday. Goessel’s season begins 2-0.
