Goessel volleyball goes 7-0 without losing a set

Staff writer

The Goessel volleyball team played Sept. 26 and Saturday and won each contest. The Bluebirds defeated Wheat State League foes Wakefield 25-6, 25-7 and then Centre 25-12, 25-5 on Sept. 26.

Goessel played on Saturday at the Canton-Galva Invitational Tournament. Goessel first defeated Little River, 25-14 and 25-9 in the early morning game. They found little opposition from the Wichita Home School Warriors, 25-5, 25-5. The Bluebirds won the final game in pool play with Solomon 25-17, 25-14. In semifinal action, Goessel defeated Sunrise Academy 25-8, 25-11.

In the championship match, Brittney Hiebert began serving and accumulated two aces en route to a 5-0 lead.

Although the Bluebirds did not look sharp, Eden Hiebert was able to put away several spikes, as Madison Smith kept Gorilla hits in play. The Bluebirds led 17-12, but Solomon took advantage of several Goessel errors to take an 18-17 lead.

Audessi Unruh dropped in an ace serve as the Bluebirds crept ahead and Goessel scored the set point with Kara Burkholder at the serving line. The Bluebirds won 25-22.

In the second set, Solomon started strong with a 4-1 lead. With Savanna Wuest serving, the Bluebirds scored six unanswered points. Goessel was in command, 12-8 when Brittney Hiebert caught fire from the middle.

Point after point, Wuest set the ball just above the net and Hiebert spiked for points. The Bluebirds outscored the Gorillas 13-1 to dominate the match, winning 25-9.

“We were just off the net in the earlier games, but hitting from the middle is something we work on every day,” coach Crysta Guhr said.

“I am really, really ecstatic about this for the girls,” Guhr said about Goessel moving up to 2A. “This will be new for them and challenging. This gives us something new to work for.”

Goessel is now 7-0 in the Wheat State League, with matches against ranked Rural Vista and Herington on Tuesday. The Bluebirds are 27-0 overall.
