Golfers compete at Pine Edge

Staff writer

The 9th annual putting contest was held Saturday at the Pine Edge Golf Course in Goessel. The competition is a fundraiser for the course and draws in golfers from multiple counties.

Golfers had the opportunity to compete for prizes as well as prestige. They were treated to barbecue lunch following the tournament.

Of the 22 who competed in the tournament, five winners were named. The following golfers placed in the competition: Ray Brundige Jr., third, Mike Cavanaugh, second, and Joe Landers, first.

“Those who placed received a cash prize and the first place winner was awarded a green vest,” Myron Schmidt course owner and operator said.

The placing putters were given the opportunity to putt for a Hustler Mower. To win, the golfer had to make shots from three, six and 23 feet away. No one won the mower.

Eighteen teams then competed in the two-person scramble competition, where the teams played for the highest score. The winners were Greg Schmalzried and Byron Lopez, third, Everett Ryan and Alan Tigard, second, and Ray Brundige Jr. and Ray Brundige Sr., first.

Schmidt founded the course 10-years-ago. The ex-dairy farmer built and designed the course around his house himself.
