Group makes walking fun

Whether for health or sociability, an informal group of Hillsboro residents have begun walking together three evenings a week.
Organized by Treena Lucero, they began walking May 30 and adopted the slogan, “Better Together.”
Participants walk at 8 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Walks vary from 1.25 to 3.75 miles along various routes mapped by Lucero.
“The group averages from 6 to 10,” Lucero said. “When we have a large group, we split up into smaller groups.”
Six walkers showed up Friday. All agreed that walking was important to their health.
Anne Janzen, a teacher at Hillsboro schools, said joining the group helped her maintain health efforts she makes through the school district’s Better You program for staff members.
“I spend one hour a day doing things for my health,” she said.
Sandra Ruder said she joined the group because she was trying to get healthier and change her lifestyle.
Charlene Pschigoda said the group gave her an incentive to walk. She enjoys socializing while walking.
“Nobody walks alone,” she said.
