Groups plan to rake leaves

Two youth organizations in Marion are planning yard-raking projects this fall.

Marion High School Key Club will have a community service project of raking leaves for senior citizens who are unable to do so themselves, sponsor Lori McLinden said. And the second-grade Brownie Girl Scouts have started raking yards to raise money for Marion Ministerial Alliance.

Key Club

A date isn’t set yet for Key Club’s project, but it will be sometime in November, because if done too early, more leaves accumulate, she said. In the past Key Club has worked with Marion Senior Center to identify whose yards to rake. People can also make suggestions to McLinden by calling (620) 382-2168 or e-mailing mclinlor@usd408.com

Key Club has 36 members, but not all will be able to help with raking because of other obligations, McLinden said.

Girl Scouts

Ta’Leah Stegman invited her fellow second-grade Brownies to help rake yards to raise money for Marion Ministerial Alliance and Friends of Mosaic Church in Wichita. Both organizations provide assistance to needy families.

They began Saturday with seven children — including ones not in Girl Scouts — and two adults. During the weekend they raked four yards and raised $102. Two more yards are in the works.

People who wish to have their yards raked can contact Jennifer Stegman at (620) 381-4789.

Stegman said there is already discussion of doing something similar for snow shoveling.
