Hamm takes third at Hesston
The Hillsboro High School tennis team finished fifth May 2 in the Central Kansas League tennis tournament in Hesston.
Jarod Hamm finished third in the No. 2 singles bracket. He defeated Zach Brashear of Sterling in the first round, 6-4 and 6-2, but lost to Connor Chambers of Smoky Valley, 6-2 and 6-1. Hamm defeated Liam Kahmeyer of Pratt, 6-1 and 6-1 in the third-place match.
“Jarod continues to play well with a lot of determination and hustle,” Coach Stuart Holmes said. “His singles record now stands at 15-6 for the season.
The Trojans No. 1 doubles team of Harry Faber and Daniel Gray finished fourth. Faber and Gray defeated Pratt, 6-3, 2-6 and 14-12 in the tiebreak.
“I thought they did a good job of battling for every point and using a variety of shots to win points,” Holmes said.
They lost to Hesston, 6-0 and 6-0, and Sterling, 6-0 and 6-3, in the third-place match.
No. 1 singles player Grant Shewey lost his first match to Thomas Mayberry of Pratt, 7-5 and 6-2, before defeating Jake Kaufman of Kingman, 9-0, in the fifth-place match.
No. 2 doubles team, Tyler Funk and Jeff Pritchard lost to Pratt, 6-1 and 6-2, and in the fifth-place match to Haven, 9-5.
