Goessel High School alumna Karina Harvey earned Capital One Academic All-District 6 volleyball team honors recently.
Harvey, a sophomore at McPherson College, maintained a 4.0 grade point average while playing volleyball as a defensive specialist for the Bulldogs. She is one of two Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference athletes named to the all-district squad.
Harvey, who graduated from Goessel High School in 2010, is a sociology major at McPherson College. She advances to the national ballot for Academic All-American honors with winners from eight other districts. McPherson College competes in the College Division of District 6, which consists of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and junior college student-athletes who attend school in Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, and South Dakota.
McPherson College head volleyball coach Susan Barton said Harvey, like several other girls from the Goessel/Hillsboro area came into her program with a good work ethic.
“These girls are very disciplined,” she said. “Our number one goal as a volleyball team is to have the highest grade point average of any group on campus. My players work very hard at their sport and just as hard in the classroom. I am very proud of them.”
Also attaining 4.0 grade status at McPherson College is senior Kory Hiebert, a music major from Goessel. Barton said Aspen Frey and Karis Janzen of Goessel, and Tiffany Rooker of Hillsboro, are also academic team leaders with grade point averages over 3.8. Frey, Janzen, and Rooker are sophomores at the college.
