Health fair to offer massages for 1st time

Neck and foot massages will be available at the county health fair for the first time Saturday.

Massage therapists Rachel Gfeller and Shirley Davis will offer mini massages. Fay Chiropractic will do scoliosis checks and mini massages.

Health fair coordinator Jessica Gilbert has wanted to have massages available for years but couldn’t find someone available to give them.

Gilbert’s next goal is to have musicians perform at the health fair.

More than 25 exhibitors will be at the fair, each with a prize drawing. Prizes will include gift cards, free services, gift baskets, and more.

Marion County emergency medical services will offer blood pressure checks, Legacy Eyecare will clean and adjust glasses, and Safe Hope will have a popcorn machine going.

The health fair will be 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Shari Flaming Center for the Arts in Hillsboro.

The annual health fair is an opportunity to meet local providers, get lab work at a discounted rate, and get a flu shot or COVID vaccination, health department director Krista Schneider said.

Adrienne’s Coffee Shop in the performing arts center will give $1 off any tall beverage to people who get lab services or vaccinations.

Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), lipid panel, complete blood count (CBC) with differential, and thyroid-stimulating hormone tests (TSH) will be available for $25 for all.

Prostate specific antigen (PSA) tests for men aged 40 and older, and hemoglobin A1C tests will be an additional $10 each. Results will be mailed within two weeks.

COVID-19 Moderna vaccine will be available along with Fluzone and high-dose flu vaccines.

The health department accepts Medicare, Medicaid, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Most major insurance companies will be billed, but fairgoers are being urged to call their insurance companies to check whether vaccinations from out-of-network providers will be covered.

For uninsured people, the department will have Fluzone vaccines available for $20.

“The health fair is a lovely way to spend a Saturday morning,” Gilbert said. “Get yourself a beverage at Adrienne’s and peruse the exhibits and all the prizes they offer. You just might win something.”

More information is available from the department at (620) 382-2550.
