HHS scholars compete

2-3 at Goessel meet

Hillsboro High School Trojans scholars’ bowl team narrowly missed advancing to the tournament rounds Thursday at Southeast of Saline.

The team finished with a 3-2 record in pool play with wins over Centre, 60-50; Sacred Heart, 80-10; and Council Grove, 60-40. Losses were against Salina Central, 55-40, and Smoky Valley, 55-50.

Team members competing at the tournament were Sam Bookless, Jonathan King, George Steketee, and Evan Wienck.

“The team had a good day and competed very well,” coach Stuart Holmes said. “With just one more correct answer we would have won the Smoky Valley match and been 4-1 and advanced to the championship quarterfinals.

“Overall, the team continues to improve and many of the guys had their best day of the year. Brianna Loewen had a conflict and wasn’t able to go, so with her back for league and regionals the team looks to be very competitive.”

Goessel High School meet

The team finished with a 2-3 record at the Goessel High School meet. Team members at the meet were Bookless, Loewen, King, Steketee, and Wienck.

The team earned consecutive wins against Newton, 60-30, and Goessel, 60-50.

The Trojans then lost matches against Solomon, 60-30, Hesston, 60-40, and Inman, 40-30.

“The team got off to a good start with two wins but just needed a question or two in a couple other matches to finish in the top two teams and get out of pool play,” Holmes said.
