The Hillsboro High School girls’ tennis team placed seventh out of eight teams Thursday in Hillsboro.
The Trojans finished behind, in order, Chapman, Sterling, Circle, Wichita Collegiate, Trinity Catholic of Hutchinson, and Wichita Independent, and ahead of Nickerson, but with 27 points, the Trojans were closer to second place than eighth.
Singles
Allison Weber placed second in the No. 1 singles bracket with a record of 2-1. She began by cruising to an 8-0 victory over Victoria Smalling of Nickerson, then defeated Ryce Stuckey of Sterling, 8-5. In the finals, she lost to Mary Meeker of Wichita Collegiate, 8-5.
Erin Winter placed sixth in No. 2 singles with a record of 1-2. She lost to Sydney Breault of Circle, 8-3, but defeated Dani Medrano of Wichita Independent, 8-5. In the fifth-place match, she was defeated by Makenzie Nisly of Nickerson, 8-4.
Doubles
Peyton Loewen and Allison Gray were 1-2 in the No. 1 doubles bracket, finishing in seventh place. They lost matches against Wichita Independent, 8-0, and Circle, 8-1, but defeated Nickerson, 8-1.
Claire Heyen and Bailey Kaufman placed seventh in No. 2 doubles with a record of 1-2. They lost matches against Trinity Catholic of Hutchinson, 8-1, and Wichita Independent, 8-0, before defeating Nickerson in the seventh-place match, 8-3.
Wichita Collegiate
The Trojans also competed Sept. 18 at Wichita Collegiate. Weber finished second in No. 1 singles, losing only in the finals to Meeker of Collegiate, 8-7 (8-6 tiebreaker). She defeated players from Wellington, 8-1, and Winfield, 8-5.
Winter lost matches in No. 2 singles to players from Wellington, 8-2, and Newton, 8-4, but won the seventh-place match against Neodesha, 8-3.
Both doubles pairings were new for the meet. Loewen and Kaufman lost all three of their No. 1 doubles matches to Salina Central, 8-0, Wellington, 8-1, and Neodesha, 8-4.
Lea Davidson and Hannah Funk paired together for their first varsity matches in No. 2 doubles. They lost to Wellington, 8-0, Winfield, 8-0, and Neodesha, 8-3.
