HHS tennis players earn all-league honors

Hillsboro High School tennis players Grant Shewey and Harry Faber earned All-League honors by placing in the top three at the Central Kansas League tournament in Hillsboro.

“(It) is quite an accomplishment as our league is outstanding in tennis,” Head coach Stuart Holmes said. “Hesston, Sterling, and Smoky Valley will all be in contention for a state trophy again.”

Faber finished second in the No. 2 singles bracket. He defeated Tyler Garrison of Kingman, 6-0 and 6-0, and Liam Kahmeyer of Pratt, 6-1 and 6-4. Faber lost to Collin Martin of Hesston, 6-1 and 6-1, in the championship match.

“The highlight for Harry might be his semifinal win over another good player from Pratt who had a record of 23-3,” Holmes said.

Shewey defeated Nick Meng of Kingman, 6-1 and 6-2, but lost in the semifinal of Keegan LeFevre of Hesston, 6-0 and 6-0. Shewey defeated Thomas Mayberry of Pratt, 6-1 and 6-0.

The No. 1 doubles team of Daniel Gray and Jeff Pritchard took fifth place with a 9-3 win over the team from Kingman.
