HHS wrestlers ready for regionals

Austin Cross and Tyrell Thiessen had the best weeks of any Hillsboro wrestlers.

Thiessen, in the 285-pound division, won both of his matches in the Central Kansas League Tournament on Saturday, defeating Brix Brickley of Smoky Valley and Patrick Deegan of Hesston. Thiessen is now 27-4 this season and is ranked fourth in 3-2-1A.

“Tyrell is in a great position to finish the season with a state medal,” head coach Scott O’Hare said. “His mentality and toughness will have to match his physical ability. If it does, I like his chances over the next two weeks.”

Cross, 145 pounds, went 4-1 in the tournament only losing to Nic Johnson of Halstead. Cross defeated Johnson, 8-5, during the Halstead tournament. He is now 29-8 this season.

Tanner Jones, 170 pounds, picked up four more wins over the past week to improve his record to 26-9. O’Hare said eight of his nine losses have come to state-ranked wrestlers.

“He has the ability to win a regional championship and finish with a state medal.” O’Hare said.

Jon Carey, 120 pounds, picked up two wins to place fourth in the CKL tournament.

“Jon is starting to come around after missing the first half of the season,” O’Hare said.

O’Hare also pointed out 18-15 Preston Nelson, 152 pounds, as another wrestler who could do well at regionals.

“I believe he could really surprise some people if he wrestles up to his potential and reduces mistakes that have cost him in many matches this season,” O’Hare said.

The regional tournament is Friday and Saturday in Fredonia.
