Hillsboro basketball opens with win for girls
Boys fall in 2-overtime thriller
Hillsboro girls basketball started on a high note with a 49-45 victory over Belle Plaine Friday at home.
The Trojans led 27-20 midway through the third quarter, but Belle Plaine cut the margin to 38-33 by early in the fourth quarter.
Hillsboro did enough to hold off the visitors, and rode to the four-point victory.
The ninth-ranked boys team fought a long battle, but fell to seventh-ranked Belle Plaine 67-64 after two overtimes.
Hillsboro trailed 37-35 after three quarters, but pulled even at 53-53 to send the game to overtime.
Points were tough to come by in the first overtime, as the score remained locked 55-55 headed into a second overtime.
Despite the extra playing time, both teams increased the scoring output, with Belle Plaine barely outscoring Hillsboro, 12-9, to hand the Trojans a loss.
Both teams returned to play Tuesday against Lyons for the Trojans’ opening match of a tournament in Moundridge. They will play again Thursday against Inman.
