Hillsboro Chess Guild is third in 3A
Hillsboro Chess Guild members traveled to Blue Valley Northwest High School Saturday at Overland Park, where they competed with the best chess players in the state.
Hillsboro High School placed 11th out of 27 schools of all sizes. Only Chaparral High School and Wichita Independent placed ahead of HHS among 3A schools.
The kindergarten-through-sixth-grade team placed third out of 11 teams.
The fifth-grade-and-younger team placed seventh among 14 teams.
In the kindergarten-through-third-grade division, the team placed fifth out of 20 teams.
With 20 students competing, it was the largest group the guild has taken to state, sponsor Janet Whisenhunt said.

Hillsboro teams earn trophies at home meet
Hillsboro Chess Guild earned third-place trophies in the third-grade-and-younger and fifth-grade-and-younger divisions of a tournament March 6 in Hillsboro. The eighth-grade-and-younger and 12th-grade-and-younger teams each placed fourth.
