Hillsboro council sets trash rates

Staff writer

Hillsboro council members Tuesday set rates for the limited number of out-of-city residents who get trash service from the city.

Hillsboro stepped up in to fill part of a gap left by Waste Connections’ abandonment of county customers near Hillsboro.

The city’s refuse department is picking up trash for about 10 families in a housing development at Jade and 190th Rds.

Originally, customers in the development were charged the same as city residents but had been told their rates could change.

Council members set the collection fee at $16.25. The city rate is $14.75.

They were paying Waste Connections more money, but the service is different. The city will pick up one polycart per week, while Waste Connections would pick up more trash.

City administrator Matt Stiles told council members that the city’s insurance company and Mahney Roofing, which estimated $187,000 to repair a roof at the airport hangar damaged in a July windstorm, had agreed on a $28,700 repair.

Mahney Roofing’s original quote included replacing the whole roof and some side panels.

“The hanger building was built in 1991 and is insured for cash value replacement,” Stiles said. “We also have a $10,000 wind and hail deductible, so at this point it is hard to say what the final outcome could be.”
