Hillsboro eatery
evicted

Staff writer

Carla G. Hamm, who owns Mama C’s in Hillsboro, was ordered Feb. 2 to vacate the eatery’s building at 111 W. Grand Ave. and pay in $9,960.50 back rent and late fees and $2,500 in costs.

Hamm, who already plans to open in Canton and says she has had ongoing problems with a leaky roof at the location where she prepares and sells food, did not appear for a Feb. 1 court hearing to tell a judge why she was behind on rent. A default judgment was entered against her.

Hamm’s conflicts with Panda Property Management and building owner George Yang involve both unpaid rent and a leaking roof.

The building, which formerly housed Radio Shack and Quick Flick Video and has two additional segments that house Panda Kitchen and Mama C’s, leaked so badly in the main portion where Radio Shack was located that the city of Hillsboro first ordered Yang to repair the building and roof, then hired a roofing company to bring the building into compliance with city code. Yang’s contractor didn’t complete the roof repair satisfactorily, according to the city.

Hillsboro city administrator Matt Stiles said no roof leaks could be found in either of the segments of the building that house restaurants.

“She always said it was leaking, but it was never visible that it was,” Stiles said.

Hamm said the leak in her portion of the building had caused poor state inspections. While the state has worked with her, Yang has not, she said.

Before she was evicted, Hamm was trying to find another location in Hillsboro but hadn’t had any success.
