Hillsboro firefighters get helping hand

Staff writer

A grant from the Federal Emergency Management Administration will be used to buy personal safety items for Hillsboro Fire Department.

The $129,907 Assistance to Firefighters grant will be used to buy 11 sets of bunker gear, eight face pieces, and 12 self-contained breathing apparatus.

Fire chief Ben Steketee said the department applied for $328,526 in the hopes of purchasing a gear washer, air compressor, mobile and portable radios, and rapid intervention team pack in addition to the items approved.

It is not yet known how soon the equipment will be in the firehouse because getting the money requires complying with many FEMA regulations.

“Now there are many hoops to jump through,” Steketee said.

The department was also given a $500 grant from the Land-O-Lakes company. That grant was facilitated through Cooperative Grain and Supply.
