Hillsboro jumpers, throwers lead way at invitational

Thursday was a statement performance for Hillsboro’s field event specialists, with 13 athletes placing at the Halstead Invitational.

Wes Shaw, who took top honors in shot put and discus, led the way for the Trojans. Hillsboro scored 41 of its 48 points on field events, which was enough to place seventh as a team.

Not to be outdone, the girls tallied 43 points for a sixth-place team finish. They had no individual winners, but Jessica Saunders finished with second and third place finishes in her throwing events, while Addie Berens took second in javelin, and Sammie Saunders went for third in triple jump.

Girls top finishers: 4-by-100-meter, fourth place, 57.34 seconds; shot put, J. Saunders third place, 37-feet-7-inches; discus, J. Saunders second place, 124-feet-5-inches; high jump, Iris Klein T-fifth place, 4-feet-8-inches; triple jump, S. Saunders third place, 31-feet-10-inches, Eva Franz fifth place, 30-feet-9½-inches; javelin throw, A. Berens second place 119-feet-11-inches; 400-meter, Eva Franz fifth place, 1:06.53 3; 300-meter-hurdles, S. Saunders seventh place, 56.28 seconds.

Boys top finishers: Shot put, Shaw first place, 57-feet-2-inches; Jared Janzen sixth place, 46-feet-5¼-inches; discus, Shaw first place, 165-feet-6-inches; long jump, Josiah Driggers third place, 21-feet-¾-inch; triple jump, Driggers first place, 43-feet-1½-inches, Carson Linnens fifth place, 39-feet-5¾-inches; 1600-meter, Caleb Diener fourth place, 5:02.87; 3200-meter, Dillon Boldt fifth place, 111:20.99.
