Hillsboro junior varsity boy’s cross-country team placed third at its first meet Sunday at Augusta. Coach Stuart Holmes had the entire team compete since half the team was new to cross-country and they were competing against bigger schools.
Placing in the top 25 were Nathan Vogel, fifth place, with a time of 18 minutes, 35.88 seconds; Bret Mueller, 10th place, 18:57.91; and Jonathan King, 11th place, 18:58.56.
Others who participated in the meet were Josh Richert, Dimitri McClelland, Justin King, Michael Christian, and Daniel Gray.
“Running their first-ever 5K cross-country race were Dimitri, Justin, Josh, and Daniel,” Holmes said. “Daniel ran with a good steady pace. Justin and Dimitri showed a competitive heart that helped them push through the discomfort of a first race, and Josh did a good job of being patient the first mile and moving up well in the last two miles.
“Running well enough to medal in the top 10 were Nathan and Bret with Jonathan right behind Bret in 11th place,” he said. “Michael, like all the guys, finished strong so we are looking forward to next week.”
