Hillsboro musicians win awards at festival

The Hillsboro High School Band had four medalists at the 3A State Music Festival on April 27 at Southeast of Saline.

The mixed winds trio of Marah Franz, Allison Gray, and Kennedy Klein earned a I rating and medals performing Ludwig van Beethoven’s “German Dance.” Klein earned another medal as a flute soloists performing Victor Herbert’s “Serenade.” Vocal ensemble Spirit-N-Celebration and soloist Daniele Melton received I ratings and medals, as well.

The mixed ensemble, SNC Women, SNC Men, and soloists Ashley Bartel, Tyler Burst, Tyler Funk, Abigail Kliewer, and Daniel Nelson each received a II rating, which is the second-best rating.

Melton gets singing scholarship

Melton has been accepted into the Kansas State University Summer Choral Institute and received a $1,500 scholarship.

The choral institute selects 40 members by audition. The institute is an intensive week of rehearsals, classes, coaching, performances, lectures, and other programs.

Three to perform at choral directors’ convention

Allison Hill, Kliewer, and Melton were three of 80 singers selected to perform in the Kansas Choral Directors’ Women’s Chorus at the Kansas Choral Directors Association convention this summer.

They will spend two days in intense rehearsals, culminating in a performance July 12 at Grace Episcopal Cathedral in Topeka.
