Hillsboro runners place in top 10
Hillsboro’s cross-country team continued its quest to qualify for state, placing a runner in the top 10 for both the girls’ and boys’ races during last week’s meet in Herington.
Emersyn Funk was the Trojans’ top finisher, placing third in the girls’ race with a time of 22:45.3.
She was followed 11 spots later by her teammates, with Ainsley Duell finishing 14th in 24:56.6, Moriah Jost 16th in 26:07.9, and Millie Sechrist taking 25th with a time of 30:31.5.
On the boys’ side, Caleb Diener was the team’s best challenger, securing a sixth-place finish in 18:32.4.
Not to be outdone by the girls’ finish, all five Trojans who scored in the boys’ race clocked in under 25 minutes.
Pedro Nieto was Hillsboro’s second finisher under 20 minutes, with his 19:49.4 taking 16th place.
Tristan Reed and Nick Cunningham both completed strong races, with Reed’s 21:09.9 taking 28th place, and Cunningham in 34th with 23:20.2. Josh Diener rounded out the Trojans’ scoring, scraping under 25 minutes, with his 24:58.9 good for 42nd place.
The remaining two finishers were Nathan Lopez in 44th place with a 25:35.3, and Jason Latham one spot behind in 26:25.2.
